School Speaker Tells Teens: “Dateable Girls Know How to Shut Up”
The students at Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas, learned some, ahem, important life lessons recently from motivational speaker Justin Lookado: The girls you want to date are the ones “who know how to shut up.”
Lookado is a Christian speaker who was hired to give a thought-provoking talk by the PTA. He offers many controversial comments about boys and girls dating on his website, R.U. Dateable. There, he outlines his ‘rules’ for high school dating, such as rule number six, “Be Mysterious.” In his words, “Dateable girls know how to shut up. They don’t monopolize the conversation. They don’t tell everyone everything about themselves. They save some for later. They listen more than they gab.” The website goes on to refer to boys as “stronger and more adventurous than girls,” among other things.
According to local news station WFAA, Richardson’s students were understandably outraged by the sexist comments of the speaker and walked out on Lookado. He told WFAA that many “circled around” him afterward to question the content of his speech. When news traveled home about the speaker, concerned parents also complained.
Richardson’s mother Dr. Jaime Clark-Soles told the Dallas Observer, "I am extremely troubled by the fact that Richardson High School would bring in an 'expert' speaker who holds the dangerous, misogynistic views that advance a rape culture such as those expressed on his website.”
WFAA reports that school principal Charles Bruner apologized to parents and students via a voicemail message that included this statement: "Some others were offended by his choice of non-religious terminology used to illustrate his topics. I deeply regret this. It was not the intent to offend anyone, and I apologize to those who were."
Not only is this horrifying in itself, but It’s also difficult to believe that high school students really need a speaker to motivate them to date one another in the first place. You would think that probably comes naturally at their age!
