The Vampire Diaries

Will The Vampire Diaries Be Renewed For Season 6?

The Vampire Diaries just celebrated its 100th episode (aka Season 5, Episode 11) – a massive landmark for any television series. TVD continues to perform well creatively and in the ratings. So, will it be renewed for a sixth season?

Right now, The CW is enjoying a surge in its ratings. Historically, the young network has never been able to compete with the Big Four television networks – aka CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox – but, for the first time, that is changing and TVD is a big part of that. In the much-coveted 18-49 demographic, TVD has been beating ABC’s Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and tying with Fox’s The X Factor. It’s hard to imagine that The CW would let go of a show that has consistently been one of its biggest performers for more than four seasons.

Thus far, The Originals has done extremely well for The CW. Right now, it helps that it is bringing in viewership from TVD; the possibility of more crossover between the series is an exciting one, one that keeps viewers tuning separate from what the show brings to the table independently. We think The Originals could survive without its source show on the air, but – especially in its first few seasons – having TVD as a crutch will be helpful.

A huge factor in TVD’s continued existence is the willingness of its three main stars – Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert), Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) – to stay on the show. It is hard to imagine how TVD would survive without any one of these three. Right now, they are contracted through six seasons, which means the show will probably air for at least another season.

Barring any acts of god (or vampires), we think TVD will get a sixth season, though we’re not so sure past that. Even the happiest casts (and crews) tend to want to move onto new and different things after a long time on one television show – this can be especially true for younger casts. We love TVD, but we’d rather it go out with a bang than limp along with half its cast and a creative team no longer excited about its storytelling. Nina agrees…

"I always like it when a show ends on a good note," Nina told MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. "I don't like anything to be dragged out past the point of quality 'cause I think you can only tell a story so long until it gets watered down… I think every show that I've enjoyed has made it to the sixth season and put a conclusion to it.”

Do you hope TVD has a sixth season? Do you want it to go one past that? Sound off in the comments below!
