Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Is Ali Lying to the Liars?
In the brand new promo for Pretty Little Liars’ highly anticipatedwinter premiere, we see the Liars doubting the story of their alive-again BFF. This is probably a good instinct, considering lying is pretty much Ali’s M.O. — but has the teenaged mean girl changed? Is Alison lying to her friends this time about her life-on-the-run? We speculate below!
We’re pretty impressed with the Liars’ cynicism in Ali’s story. Seems that dealing with “A”’s for a few years has made them pretty paranoid. And, in the case of Ali, we think they have more than enough reason to be. This is a girl who lies as easily as she breathes. Most of what the Liars know about Alison, they found out after her alleged death through their own investigation — never from the lips of their friend when she was alive, well, and supposedly best friends with them. In the promo, the girls even go so far as to suspect Alison of being “A” and we say, all the power to them! She was perfectly positioned as a presumed-dead girl to enact her mean girl schemes on a grand, town-wide level. She has the means, opportunity, and motive (if you count schadenfreude). We say Ali is a Liar until proven otherwise.
On the other hand, we presume faking one’s death can change someone. Ali has supposedly been on the run for the last few years, and that must shift one’s priorities away from mean girl machinations and towards such things as living in breathing. And we have some third-person evidence that the tale Ali is telling this time — that she is being chased — is true. We saw Ezra storm into that lair at the end of the summer finale, seemingly upset that his hunt for Ali had been compromised. At least for now, it seems that Ali’s fantastical tale of someone so desperate to find her, she had to fake her death seems legitimate.
We’re inclined to believe that the answer might lie somewhere in between the two extremes. Perhaps Ali isn’t all-out lying, but we doubt she’s telling the Liars the entire truth. Just how did she fake her death? Is Marion Cavanaugh’s “suicide” involved? Who else knows? And why is “A” so desperate to find her? As the proverb goes, a half truth is a whole lie, and we suspect Ali of half-truthery. If there’s anything we’ve learned from this show, it’s that one new piece of information can turn the truth we thought we knew on its head. What other truths are Ali (and the rest of the Liars, for that matter) holding onto?
Do you think Alison is lying? About what? Sound off in the comments below!
