Teen movies of the '90s may have been Shakespeare crazy (see: Romeo + Juliet and 10 Things I Hate About You), but the 1999 rom-com She’s All That went the George Bernard Shaw route, reworking Pygmalion into a high school romance for the ages.
After Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) gets dumped by his uber-hot girlfriend, Taylor Vaughan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), he makes a bet with his best friend Dean Sampson (Paul Walker) that he can turn any girl into the prom queen and exact sweet revenge on his ex. Enter Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook), an artsy outcast and diamond in the rough. Under those thick glasses and frumpy frocks is a prom queen just waiting to be unleashed. One makeover later, and Laney is transformed from antisocial geek into smokin’ hot and chic!
But what starts out as a social experiment quickly turns complicated when Zack starts falling for Laney and his original intentions are revealed. When all is said and done, Zack still gets the girl. And as the two slow-dance in Laney’s backyard after prom (cue that Sixpence None the Richer song), she utters the eternally witty line that echoes in the memory of teenage girls everywhere: “I feel just like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. You know, except for the whole hooker thing.” We sighed, in a major way.
Proof of the cult love still surrounding ;She's All That? Much lauded (or maligned, depending on who you ask) director M. Night Shyamalan revealed in an interview with Movies.com that he secretly ghost wrote the beloved flick, causing shock waves among Gen Y-ers everywhere. It's the ultimate twist!
