Vampire Diaries Burning Question: Does Aaron Know About Dr. Wes Maxfield’s Experiments?
We have to admit, the guardian/ward relationship between Dr. Wes Maxfield (Rick Cosnett) and Aaron (Shaun Sipos) on The Vampire Diaries really intrigues us. They are an unconventional duo, Aaron’s placement in the college professor’s care coming about when his parents were killed by bears (read: vampires) on a hunting trip. But how much does Aaron know about his legal guardian? Is he in on the inner workings of the Augustine Society? Or is he just an orphaned college boy trying to make the best of a rotten situation?
Either Aaron is the world’s best liar, or he is completely in the dark about the Augustine Society, the presumed death-by-vamp of his parents, and his guardian’s role in vampire experimentation. While hanging at the Augustine Society mixer, Katherine quizzed the boy on the vampire-hating society, and Aaron looked completely lost. Even Katherine believed his ignorance, and she’s a skilled enough liar herself that she should be able to spot another. It’s been so long since we’ve had a character who is genuinely in the dark about the supernatural world that we’ve forgotten both a) what it looks like and b) how common it should be. On most shows, the status quo is that the characters don’t believe in vampire, ghosts, werewolves, and witches. On this show, that concept has been flipped on its head, making us paranoid of those still in the dark. Why would Aaron believe in the stuff of horror films?
Um, maybe because he’s surrounded by it! When we first met Aaron, he told Elena that everyone around him seems to die — but that wasn’t the whole story, was it? Everyone around him dies via supernatural circumstances. His parents were presumably slaughtered by a vamp. Megan, Elena’s roomie and his friend, was killed by an Augustine vamp at a frat party. And Jesse, his college roommate, was turned super-vamp by Wes and then staked by Elena. And this doesn’t even take into account the still-alive people in his life who know about and/or are vampires. As refreshing as it is to meet a character who doesn’t know about vamps, it would be kind of cool to find out that Aaron has been playing the TVDers with his ignorance all along. Maybe he knows everything about the Augustine Society, and is a part of their scheming. We would definitely watch a show about Dr. Wes and Aaron as a makeshift family of badass vampire hunters — even if our allegiance to Elena & Co. made us narratively conflicted.
