Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey: First Look at Anna Bates in the Season 4 Finale! (PHOTO)

When we left Anna Bates (Joanne Froggatt) at the end of the February 16 episode her jaw was on the floor. The Downton Abbey lady’s maid had just learned the man who viciously attacked and raped her during the January 12 episode was no more after Mr. Green (Nigel Harman) found himself at the wrong end of a passing vehicle.

The one potential downside to this development is that it could get Anna’s dear husband John (Brendan Coyle) into trouble. Mr. Bates already has a record after the equally mysterious passing of his ex-wife Vera (remember that crazy?). Vera’s death landed her former husband in prison where he almost got knifed a time or two. Now, with Mr. Bates the primary suspect (Well, at least onscreen. You all had a different idea), could he be headed back to the clink?

We like to think he’s safe after seeing the first photo of the couple during the upcoming Season 4 finale, set to air on PBS on Sunday, February 23, for two whole hours! In the picture, husband and wife look as happy as we’ve seen them in many an episode. Both are smiling into each other’s eyes. They’re also out of their somber uniforms, trading in Downton’s formal duds for lighter summer wear.

Where are they anyway? It looks to be a seaside getaway, probably courtesy of Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) who “treats the staff to a special day out” according to the official episode synopsis.

Details on Mr. Bates and Anna are noticeably absent from that same synopsis but the couple do make an appearance in the one-minute teaser trailer released for the episode. Things aren’t quite as sunny in that video with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) strongly suggesting she thinks Bates is behind Mr. Green’s death (not that she looks all that sad about it). There’s also a very brief audio clip of a concerned sounding Anna asking, “What does it mean?”

What does it mean, Anna? Does this new photo mean you and Bates finally find some piece after all these years? Or is the show throwing us a curveball and the troublesome tone of the trailer is what we should really expect come next Sunday? Answers. They’re all we want.
