The Vampire Diaries Burning Question: What Does Dr. Wes Want?
Dr. Wes (Rick Cosnett) has definitely piqued our attention in recent episodes of The Vampire Diaries— and it’s not just the blue, blue eyes and cheeky smile. We want to know what his evil scientist plan is! He told Damon that he is taking his research to the next level, but what does that mean? We speculate below!
This would be a little redundant, given that last season’s MacGuffin was the cure for vampirism, but it wouldn’t be without it’s intrigue. If Dr. Wes developed another “cure” for vampirism, then it would wreak havoc on our gang of characters. Most of them are vampires at this point, but not all of them want to be. If they were given the choice to turn human again, inner (and some external) conflict would ensue! It would also mean a valuable weapon in the war against vampires. If the Augustine Society could start turning their enemy back into a vulnerable state, they’d have a much better chance of taking them out.
We think it’s more likely that the Augustine Society is developing something even more nefarious: a plague that could potentially wipe out the entire vampire population. Think about it: a virus transmitted by bite could quickly spread it’s way from one vampire to another who feed on the same human. Worse yet: an airborne virus. We’re kind of hoping for this scenario because it would be totally dramatic and effective. One of the occasional weaknesses of this show is that it’s characters are a little bit too impervious to injury and death. Introduce something into the narrative that can actually hurt them, and you up the stakes and the narrative tension tenfold. Drama!
Maybe we’re getting too fancy with our theories. Dr. Wes successfully developed a vampire-feeding vampire in Jesse. Does he really need to look further than that? Maybe his next step is simply the creation of an army of this vampires — or, perhaps, a way to transition already-existing vampire into the vampire-feeding variety. If Dr. Wes creates a whole gaggle of this specific breed, practically every character on this show is in danger. Especially if he discovers how to transition already existing vampires into the vampire-feeding variety. It’s going to be hella awkward if Elena has to feed on her friends to survive. But definitely narrative gold.
