5 Cheesiest Moments on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette
The Bachelor franchise is not for the lactose intolerant — there’s less cheese in Wisconsin than an average Monday night with this gang. Even just the act of asking people to accept roses is pretty cheesy — although not as bad as Chris Harrison feeling compelled to pop in to introduce each final rose of the night. We’ve come to love the inherent silliness that goes hand-in-hand with this show, and we can only imagine Juan Pablo Galavis’s quasi-intelligible Season 18 will provide more than its share of cheesy moments. As we prepare to cringe anew, here are five classic moments of cheese from Bachelor/ette seasons past.
5. Wes serenades Jillian … and Gia
Maybe it would've been different if Wes Hayden didn't play the same song every time, but he really hit the self-promotion jackpot with "It Don't Take That Long," aka the "love don't come easy” song. He repeatedly serenadedJillian Harris on The Bachelorette Season 5, calling it her song, then played it again for Gia Allemand on Bachelor Pad Season 1. He got what he wanted out of it, and we were stuck with an earworm. He’s not the only one to serenade the lead in this franchise, but he really turned it into an art — like a velvet Elvis painting.
4. Chris Reads Poetry … Often
Love Chris Siegfried to pieces, but after a certain point on The Bachelorette Season 9, the poems crossed the line from sweet to cheesy. But hey, Desiree Hartsock is the one he needed to impress and she loved them. Every time. Here’s just one example:
3. Jake and Vienna Dance to “On the Wings of Love”
It was cheesy enough just for The Bachelor to subtitle pilot Jake Pavelka’s season “On the Wings of Love,” with Jeffrey Osborne’s song as the official theme. But on the “After the Final Rose” special, Jeffrey showed up himself to play the song as Jake and Vienna Girardi danced. At the time, Vienna looked like she at least could appreciate the cheese factor and started to giggle. It’s hard to find a video out there but this comes close to approximately the level of cheese:
2. The Mesnick
You know you’re in the cheeze zone when you’re a man who cries so dramatically it earns its own title. When Jason Mesnick dumped Molly Malaney (his future wife) on The Bachelor Season 13 finale, it was crushing for both of them. Jason ran to the balcony and clung to it as he doubled over with sobs, crying in what would be known as "The Mesnick." Jake actually tried to copy this move in the next season, but he didn't have the required commitment to pull of a true Mesnick. Leave it to the master.
1. Kasey Sings … and the Universe Cringes
Nothing could ever be cheesier than Kasey Kahl singing to Ali Fedotowsky on The Bachelorette Season 6. At least, we have to hope nothing could get cheesier. Kasey introduced himself as this fiercely earnest guy who promised to “guard and protect” Ali's heart. That was a bit over-the-top on its own, but he was nowhere near done. He sang to her on a couple of different occasions and even got a tattoo to commemorate the experience. If he took it down half a dozen notches, it might still have been too much. But the sentiment was very sweet.
