Kanye West Blasts Grammy Awards for Only Giving Him Two Nominations
It was only a matter of time before Kanye West unleashed his wrath towards the Grammy Awards.
While the rapper has received 53 Grammy nominations and 21 wins over the course of his career, he was somewhat surprisingly only nominated for two 2014 Grammy Awards— “New Slaves” for Best Rap Song and Yeezus for Best Rap Album.
Kanye was predictably outraged about his exclusion and waited until he was standing before an arena full of fans to address the subject. While performing in Phoenix, Arizona on December 10, the rapper blasted the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for not giving him the nominations he felt he deserved.
“I’m 36-years-old and I have 21 Grammys. That’s the most Grammys of any 36-year-old. Out of all those 21 Grammys, I’ve never won a Grammy against a white artist,” Kanye told the crowd. “So when the Grammy nominations came out and ‘Yeezus’ is the top one or two album on every single list, but only gets two nominations from the Grammys, what are they trying to say? Did they think that I wouldn’t notice? Do they think that, someway, I don’t have the power to completely diminish all their credibility at this moment?”
Kim Kardashian’s soon-to-be hubby even goes on to say that getting only two nominations is such an outrage that he would rather have gotten no nominations at all.
“When you see me talking about what people are doing when I say ‘marginalized,’ when I say ‘boxed in,’ when I say, ‘hold back,’ when I say people are afraid of the truth, that’s one example right in front of you. And people come to me and they congratulate me on those two nominations. F--k those nominations! It’s all but patronizing. It’s only patronizing. Don’t patronize me. I would have rather had no nominations.”
Fingers crossed that Kanye wins at least one award — it would make for one interesting acceptance speech!
