Lea Michele’s Cory Monteith Message Is 2013’s Most-Retweeted Tweet
The year is just about coming to a close, and there's no doubt that the death of Glee star Cory Monteith (Finn) is one of the saddest and most defining moments of 2013. As it turns out, Lea Michele's (Rachel) first Twitter post about his passing is the year's most-retweeted tweet.
Cory died of a mixture of heroin and alcohol on July 13, and Lea was silent on social media for just over two weeks after the tragedy. She finally addressed her fans on July 29 on Twitter, posting a photo of herself with Cory and writing, "Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart."
Now, that message from Lea has been named the most-retweeted tweet of 2013, according to Time magazine. Lea's message was reportedly retweeted 408,266 at its peak.
The tweet with the second-highest number of retweets — which was also sadly about a celebrity's passing — is the tweet from actor Paul Walker's Twitter feed that confirmed his death from a car crash last month.
Oddly, the third-most retweeted tweet of the year was One Direction star Niall Horan writing about turning 20. "Yesss ! I'm 20 ! Wohooo ! No more teens!" the boy bander tweeted in September.
This news is definitely a testament to how beloved Cory was, along with how touched people were by his relationship with Lea.
Are you surprised that Lea's tweet was the most retweeted post of the year?
