It’s been just about three months since word got round that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had called off their engagement. The two, fiancéd for more than year, went their separate ways in mid-September, right around the same time Miley debuted a new public persona complete with twerking, joint smoking, and, you know, Miley being Miley.
While Liam’s said a few things about his and Miley’s breakup — mainly that he’s single, despite photos of him locking lips with a new lady love — his 21-year-old former flame has stayed quiet (if you don’t count “Wrecking Ball,” that is). Now, however, Miley’s gone on the record about her relationship with the Aussie hunk and what it feels like to be unengaged.
“I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year,” Miley told Barbara Walters during her interview for Barbara’s 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013 special (as reported by Us Weekly).
“I don’t ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can’t be yourself,” Miley adds. She admits that her relationship with Liam may have moved too fast for people their age; the two met as teenagers while filming The Last Song in 2009. That said, however, she doesn’t regret their time together.
“I don’t think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged,” she says. “It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years. But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy. I want for those moments of silence, when I’m just at my house, by myself.”
The twerkstar adds that she hasn’t ruled marriage out despite her failed engagement: “I think I’ll want that in the times that it needs to be.” Or, you know, when she gets an itch to wear a fat rock again.
Tune in for more of Miley’s interview with Barbara Walters on Wednesday, December 18, at 9:30 p.m. EST.
