UPDATE: Four brief teasers for the second half of Season 4 aired during the New Year's Eve TWD marathon, and one featured Glenn looking a little beat up, and poised on the edge of a zombie pit. No rest for the wicked awesome! Watch that new clip below, and check out the other new videos over here. Will Glenn ever catch a break?
Are you worried about Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) in the second half of The Walking Dead Season 4?
His TV storyline is very different at this point from where he was in the comics, so that may not even be much help in guessing where he goes from here. We last saw Glenn still looking weak and run-down from his super-flu. Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) left him on that bus filled with redshirt newbies we couldn’t name if we tried.
There wasn’t a single OG on that bus except for Glenn. He must be pissed that the bus drove away without Maggie, though, since all we saw was the vehicle driving off as Maggie, Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) watched from the prison. Sasha said they’d figure it out, and we can picture Glenn trying to grab the wheel from the driver to go back for Maggie and the others.
The one promo we've seen shows two little hints about what happens next for Glenn: Early on, we see him in the dark, holding up some kind of lantern; toward the end of the promo we see people jumping out of the back of a bus. That has to be Glenn's group, it's just a matter of where they go from there.
Will we get to know some of the newbies with him or will the show find a way to lose them and focus on the many scattered characters out there? There are only so many separate storylines they can juggle while still telling one united story that keeps moving forward. This should never feel static.
Anyway, it may not be relevant, but here are some comic book spoilers on what Glenn and Maggie did after the prison battle.
*Comic book spoilers ahead*
In the comics, Glenn and Maggie fled the prison to the Greene family farm, where they reconnected with the other survivors. Maggie was distraught about the loss of her family, and life in general, and tried to hang herself. In the comics, new character Abraham tries to shoot her, thinking she’s dead and will turn, but she survives. In the books, Glenn and Maggie are caring for Sophia like their own child, since comic book Carol died back at the prison. On TV, Carol is still out there, and Glenn and Maggie are separated so it’s hard to know how they’ll play this out.
Glenn does have a bit of a role in The Hunters storyline, if they go there in Season 4.
The Hunters are cannibals, and one of them shoots Glenn in the leg when they try and take him down. Glenn's leg is patched up, though, and he ends up at the Alexandria Safe-Zone with the rest of the survivors. If you fast-forward a bit, there's good and bad news for comic book Glenn. Maggie eventually does get pregnant, which is something she wanted and they are both thrilled about. But then the group meets The Saviors and Glenn ... you won't like his meeting with that group's leader, Negan.
*End of comic book spoilers*
Showrunner Scott Gimple has said this season will be like a remix of the comics, so it’s just as likely that Glenn would take on aspects of another character’s comic book storyline instead.
At this point, we don’t really know what could be in his future, but we hate seeing Gleggie separated. Glenn has been through so much in four seasons of this show. He and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) have taken the most beatings of our group and it would be nice to see Glenn catch a break. At the very least, it would be good to see him lead the redshirt bus group, since he was a prison council member and has proven he’s capable of strong leadership. Not saying he should be the Glenntator, but this might be a chance for Glenn to shine and show what he can do.
What do you think is next for Glenn? How many episodes do you think it will taken until he’s reunited with Maggie? Two or three? More? All eight? What if the engaged lovebirds don’t reunite all season? What if one of them dies first? Please don’t kill off Gleggie!
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
