Both Grimes boys are featured in the poster, and the tagline — "Don't Look Back" — is what Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) told his son as Carl helped his injured father hobble away from the prison ruins in the Episode 8 midseason finale.
Episode 9, which still lacks a title or official synopsis, is going to heavily feature Carl. The script was written by comic book writer Robert Kirkman, who said it would be a pretty close adaptation from his books. Andrew Lincoln talked up Carl's "cool" episode a while ago, and a sneak peek of Episode 9 shows Carl leading two walkers down a lane. Carl is going to have to "step up," since Rick was hurt so bad in The Governor battle.
This poster hints to how much Carl is going to take center stage. He has the hat. He has the focus. He's eclipsing his own dad.
Every season a couple of major characters tend to die, and we're still expecting the second half to give us a few minor and maybe a major loss. But Carl will probably survive. He has a lot to do in the comics, and showrunner Scott Gimple has talked about Carl's future interaction with Negan, which won't happen in Season 4. Carl may be the only character who is truly safe. ... Then again, now that we think that, they will probably kill him.
What do you think of the poster? Too much Carl? Happy to see him in the spotlight? Are you reading into the train tracks and the dark sky, or are they just meant to represent the dark post-prison road ahead?
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
