Elle is featuring Mindy Kaling as part of its "Women in TV Issue," but readers aren't sure they like what the magazine's cover photo of Mindy Project star projects.
The 34-year-old comedian is one of four TV ladies featured for the February 2014 issue — the others being New Girl's Zooey Deschanel, Parks and Recreation's Amy Poehler, and Girls' Allison Williams.
But readers' rancor stems from the fact that Mindy — the only of the talented quartet to be a) a woman of color and b) fuller-figured — is the only one of the four to have a black-and-white cover cropped close to her face.
Coincidentally (or not), this is the second time in three months that Elle has faced criticism over allegedly covering up a star's larger body. In October, the the fashion mag was accused of hiding Melissa McCarthy's physique in a huge coat. (As we reported, Melissa later clarified that she was the one who chose the coat.)
Elle responded to the uproar in a statement issued to Us Weekly: "Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue."
Meanwhile, Mindy is making lemonade from the sour situation, tweeting, "Wishing for more skin on my Elle magazine cover? Chris Messina and I are naked on a brand new The Mindy Project tonight, ya pervs!"
Nice! It's almost as if she planned the whole thing. Maybe we're playing right into Mindy's hand. Hey, there are worse places to be!
