While we’re totally stressing about either Peggy (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) or Will (Chris Carmack) biting the dust, we realize that we’ve been ignoring our favorite couple: Rayna (Connie Britton) and Deacon (Charles Esten)! What’s next for this will they/won’t they couple?
When Nashville returns on January 15 with Season 2, Episode 11 (“I’ll Keep Climbing”), Rayna is going to be dealing with the gravity of breaking away from Edgehill. While she’s feeling the pressure, Deacon is also struggling to find his creative voice. But as soon as Season 2, Episode 12 (“Just For What I Am”) comes around, these two will be reconnecting. According to the synopsis for the episode, “Rayna asks Deacon to help write a much-needed hit for her new album, and it's like old times — perhaps too much.” Sounds good to us!
But don’t count on things going totally smooth for these two, because Peggy’s probable death “will absolutely have an impact” on Rayna’s relationship with Teddy (Eric Close), showrunner Dee Johnson tells TVLine.
We’re not saying (and definitely not hoping) that Rayna and Teddy will get back together, but seeing as how Teddy and Deacon butted heads when it came to Maddie (Lennon Stella), getting those two anywhere near each other could spell disaster. Getting close to Teddy again — even as friends — could mean friction between Rayna and Deacon.
Maybe not! According to Dee, there is always the possibility of Deacon becoming a Highway 65 artist. “How can you not have that floating around our universe,” Dee teased. “You can imagine that would be fraught with problems, if we went down that road.” Sure, they might have some fights, but Rayna turning to Deacon for help writing a song in Episode 12 sounds like the beginning of a beautiful (work) friendship.
Never say never!
