The winter premiere of Pretty Little Liars Season 4 dropped a few plot bombs on us, but the most enticing may have been Hanna’s reveal of Alison’s journal to the other Liars. Her implication that their former bestie wrote less than flattering things about her closest gal pals made us desperate to learn what’s inside. Executive producer Joseph Daugherty chatted with E! Online on the subject. What did he have to say?
"Basically Ali likes to play with real people just as much as she likes to play with dolls and that extends in the way that she writes,” said Joseph, who penned last night’s episode. “There's truth in what she writes, there's also fantasy in what she writes and what-if's, and her extrapolations and her fantasies are based on some kind of level of reality."
Did Ali make up stories about the Liars to fill the pages? And, if she’s willing to go to such lying lengths in her personal journal, how much of what she’s revealed about herself is even true? How deep does the lying run? These questions become increasingly important as the Liars potentially put their lives on the line to make Rosewood safe for Alison. When she withholds information from them, she puts them in even more danger.
Whatever the risk, it sounds like the Liars are forging ahead in their efforts to help Alison — no matter what she may have written about them. According to Joseph, the Liars will use the journal in an attempt to piece together the mystery of Ali’s fake death: "They’re trying to find out more about their friend than they knew before by getting this point of view from her. And at the same time they're looking to see if she has inadvertently, or deliberately, revealed information as to who she's most afraid of that would keep her from being able to come back.”
What do you think is inside of the journal? And how much is Alison lying about? Share your theories in the comments below!
