Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) has made some big discoveries about her family’s not-so-moral past in Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries – namely, that her father was experimenting on vampires in the basement of his Mystic Falls medical practice throughout her childhood. Question is: Will she ‘fess up to baby brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) about the revelations and – if so – how will he react? We speculate below!
Will she tell him?
Elena has a habit of trying to protect her little brother from the dangers of the world (much to his chagrin). She once had Damon completely erase his memories concerning the supernatural shenanigans going down in Mystic Falls so he could begin a new, happier life in the Pacific Northwest. Spoiler: it didn’t stick. So, will she continue this habit of keeping Jer out of the loop in the name of his protection? We think no. Jeremy is not only older now, but a vampire hunter in his own right. He arguably never needed – and definitely never wanted – her protection, and hopefully she’ll remember that.
Should she tell him?
When has withholding information on this show ever been a good idea? In the example above, Elena’s erasure of Jeremy’s memory and having him shipped to the other side of the country ultimately put him in more danger. Kol, aka an Original vampire, turned up in his new life to befriend him. With no knowledge about the existence of vampires, Jeremy couldn’t even begin to suspect what might be going on. And without any of his friends and family around to watch out for him, Kol was able to easily insinuate himself into Jeremy’s life. Bottom line: Jeremy deserves to know the truth about his father.
How would he react?
It’s hard to predict how Jeremy might react to the news that his father was a torturer of vampires. On the one hand, no one wants to see their own parent as a torturer. Jeremy’s sister and many of his girlfriends have been vampires. He himself may be a vampire hunter, but he doesn’t knowingly cause his targets pain. On the other hand, Elena took the news of her father’s vampire torture sessions surprisingly well considering she herself is a vamp. Might Jeremy react in a similar way, finding comfort in the fact that his father was able to save lives through his research. We kind of hope not – easy acceptance doesn’t make for much drama.
Do you think Elena will tell Jeremy about their father’s vampire research? Do you think she should? How do you think he will react? Sound off in the comments below!
