The midseason premiere of NBC’s The Blacklist did not fail to please as we saw our favorite fugitive Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader) go on a deadly mission to find the person responsible for his capture at the FBI blacksite. After several deadly interrogations, Red learned the he was betrayed by none other than Newton Phillips. Of course, he had to kill Newton, but after he died we were left scratching our heads wondering who he was.
After taking a closer look, we realized that we had seen Newton before. In fact, as it were, Newton turns out to be “Grey” — Red’s own henchman — best remembered as the man who interviewed Agent Elizabeth Keen’s husband, Tom Keen, in the Episode 6 “Gina Zanetakos.”
If you can recall, “Grey” impersonated the actual man that Tom was supposed to meet for a fake teacher’s position as a part of a larger scheme masterminded by Red. However, Grey was forced by a higher entity to cooperate in Red’s kidnapping in exchange for the protection of his family.
“You should’ve come to me, Grey,” Red told him.
Sigh. Newton’s last request was for his death to look like an accident, and Red told him to turn around and look out at the water… right before he suffocated him.
