Watch Keith London Sing “Roar” in the American Idol 2014 Premiere (VIDEO)
It’s been a long, hard hiatus since Candice Glover was crowned the winner of American IdolSeason 12. Thankfully, our favorite music competition returned tonight (January 15), and we met a whole new crop of hopefuls looking to become the country’s next big superstar!
It’s in Boston where the judges meet Keith London, a handyman who puts acoustic spins on popular Top 40 hits. (Yet another “white guy with a guitar!”) Keith hopes the recognition he’ll get on Idol will be the first step toward getting him out of massive student loan debt. Luckily for him, he’s got the talent to make it happen! Even though Keith flubs the beginning of Katy Perry’s “Roar,” the judges can’t help but be impressed by his original take on the song.
“I like that song, but you just made me like it more!” says J.Lo. “There’s something about the way you sang it that made me hear the words a little bit more.”
“When you do something like that and it has nothing to do with the artist that sang it, that’s what I love,” adds Keith. “Like, I know who you are, just by singing that song.”
Though Harry doesn’t completely agree, he does recognize the merit of Keith and Jennifer’s comments. “I don't think you're a good enough singer. But If they are feeling something, that says a lot about the type of stars that this show produces. This show produces stars that move people.”
