Returning American Idol judge Keith Urban will surely relate to the auditioning singers on the other side of the table when Season 13 premieres tonight at 8 pm ET on FOX. That's because he too was once a teenaged aspiring artist performing on a televised singing competition… and getting the wind taken out of his sails by the judges' critiques!
Thirty years ago, when Keith was just 16, he appeared on New Faces, a talent show broadcast in his homeland of Australia. Now, thanks to an avid fan, we have footage of the novice singer trying his luck with a version of "All Out of Love" — rocking a serious mullet and buckteeth as he sings and plays guitar.
We also have footage of the judges of the show giving him some tough love, saying that he young Keith has "immaturity" in his voice, "wrong" breathing, and "not enough strength" as a solo singer.
In a recent Idol Q&A, Keith reflected on the experience: "I got some fairly harsh criticism from the judges, but I also thought that they were right. I still had a lot to learn about my craft, and I took that to heart … I was watching it and going, 'Aw, dude, I thought I sang better than that.'"
Well, all's well that ends well! And little did those judges know the success in Keith's future.
