The Walking Dead Season 4 Finale … Will Be Like Prison Arrival on Season 3 Premiere?

Everything old is new again on The Walking Dead Season 4.

Producer/director/special effects guru Greg Nicotero recently said the second half of Season 4 will be reminiscent of The Walking Dead Season 1, since this is first time we’ll see the groups out on the road again, unprotected and unsure of where to go.

AMC suits recently talked to Entertainment Weekly, subtly teasing the Season 4 finale and where we’ll be set up for Season 5, making it sound like the start of Season 3.

EW asked if there would be budgetary differences between this season — which was half at the prison — and next season. AMC programming head Joel Stillerman said, “Well, anytime you ditch a big set and are on the road, those are expensive episodes because you’re not getting the economies of scale as when you have standing sets. But we have a pretty long-term game plan for where we’re going. We know where this season ends, which is not unlike when we got to the prison — it’s a glimpse of what Season 5 will be.”

Hmm… We got to the prison on the Season 3 premiere. On the Season 2 finale, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) made his speech that this is not a democracy and the camera pulled back to show the prison in the distance. When we reconnected with the group on the first episode of Season 3, they were still going house to house, just dreaming of a stable base. Then they took the prison and settled in for Season 3.

So maybe Season 4 ends with our group finding a new place to stay, and we’ll stay there for Season 5, which will premiere this coming October. That might fit with executive producer/comic book writer Robert Kirkman’s recent tease that the second half of this season would start “bleak” but be a bit “more hopeful” by the end. The hope of a new home?

*Comic book spoilers*

In the comics, the former Team Prison group hits the road for a while and eventually ends up at the Alexandria Safe-Zone in Alexandria, VA. That’s a long way for the group to travel from the Atlanta area, so maybe they won’t do exactly that on TV. But hey, maybe they will.

The TV version has more characters to balance, though, and they are more separated than they were in the comics. We’ve been warned that the group won’t reunite very quickly, and some members may not rejoin the group at all. So there will have to be some changes from the books, but it does sound like Season 5 might give Rick’s group a new version of the prison.

Are you glad to hear some stability hints for the Team Prison survivors? Where do you think they’ll end up in the Season 4 finale, where will they be when Season 5 starts (there may be another time jump), and who will be around to see it?

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
