Orange Is the New Black broke many gender stereotypes when it premiered last July, but one of the issues that has been brought to the forefront has been the experience of the transgender community. Since rising to fame on the Netflix series, Laverne Cox (Sophia Burset) has become a champion for transgender people — but now it’s time for her to tell her own story.
Not only is the Alabama native producing a documentary that chronicles the story of CeCe McDonald, who received a prison sentence for defending herself against a hate crime, but the talented actress is also penning a tell-all memoir.
“As a trans woman of color from a working class background, I have often felt shame about the truth of my personal story for much of my life,” Laverne says of her upcoming memoir. “By sharing my full, unvarnished story, including details of my life and family history I have never before revealed, I hope to provide a voice and safe place for those who have suffered because of their race, class, gender, abuse, violence, and trauma. I’m thrilled that Harlequin will be publishing this book.”
We can’t wait for Laverne’s book comes out, and luckily we can rest easy knowing it will hit shelves in 2015.
