Leah Messer Opens Up About Daughter Ali’s Muscular Dystrophy Diagnosis
Teen Mom 2's Leah Messer has been blessed with a healthy and happy family full of Southern belles, but her daughter, Aliannah Hope, was diagnosed with a mysterious developmental disorder when she was just a baby. Leah and her ex-husband, Corey Simms, have spent most of Ali's life in and out of hospital on an endless quest to find out more about her condition, and it looks like they're finally getting some answers.
Leah opened up about Ali's health problems during Teen Mom 2's season premiere, revealing that her little lady has a rare form of muscular dystrophy. Learning about Ali's diagnoses was gut-wrenching for Leah and Corey, and Leah has had to completely change her life to accommodate her little girl.
“We were scared because we didn’t know what her future was going to look like, but we always pushed for answers,” Leah tells In Touch. “We never gave up, and we never will. We’ll do everything we can to make sure Ali has the life that she needs.”
Ali's disorder will lead to her having to use a wheelchair, which means Leah and her husband, Jeremy Calvert, will have to sell their new home and move to a handicap-accessible house. Of course, Leah's willing to make any sacrifices necessary for her daughter.
“The disorder affects her respiratory system and progresses the older she gets,” she explains. “The bigger she gets and the more weight she gains, the harder it’ll be for her muscles to carry the weight.”
One silver-lining to Ali's diagnosis is that it brought Leah and Corey closer together. Despite the fact that they had a rough divorce, these two are completely committed to their little girl, and have learned to co-parent with mutual respect and maturity.
