Harry Connick, Jr. has already proved he’s all kinds of adorbs as a judge on season 13 of American Idol, and Parade had the opportunity to sit down with him to find out what he thinks about his peers on the panel.
When asked about Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban, the New Orleans-raised musician said, “We can disagree about things, and it’s never ugly.”
As for what he thinks fans disliked about the drama between last year’s female judges, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, Harry had his own theory.
“Quite frankly, I think the chemistry may have been a little bit off,” the hunky judge said. “I’m a big fan of everybody who was on that panel, but it’s like being with someone in a relationship—why do they click with you? It’s hard to put a finger on it.”
We have to wonder, though, is there perhaps a happy medium between the two approaches? Many fans didn’t like the excessive eye-rolling and constant barbs between the dueling divas last year, but one has to wonder whether the “nicey nice” routine between the judges this year might be just as much of a drag.
We pondered the same thing this past season on The Voice but, in the end, fans seem to love the endearing nature of the relationships between their coaches. And we tend to think that the positive spin on American Idol this year –– between the bubbly judges and showing mostly talented contestants –– has been a breath of fresh air for a show that needed a new outlook.
