If you felt uncomfortable watching Kate Gosselin’s twins Mady and Cara go speechless on TODAY last week, just imagine how you’d have felt conducting the interview. That’s what NBC’s Savannah Guthrie had to deal with as the segment anchor, and on last night’s (January 23) episode of Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen got her to spill the details.
One of the WWHL callers asked guest Savannah to share how she felt during the awkward moment. “I was really surprised … They came on, and I thought the girls had something on their mind that they wanted to get off their chest,” Savannah starts. “So I was really surprised when they didn’t say too much.” (FYI: In case you missed it, the former Jon & Kate Plus 8 stars infamously went completely silent when asked if they were “OK” after their reality TV experience — and mom Kate was less than pleased.)
But the journalist doesn’t hold any blame for the tweens. “I was kind of sympathetic to them because it’s not easy to get up on national television — this isn’t something that they do everyday — live, in the morning. They’re only 13-year-old girls, so, I felt bad for them.”
It’s pretty clear who Andy holds responsible for the incident: the girls’ mother, Kate. “In the galaxy of appearing unlikeable, has Kate Gosselin ever appeared more unlikeable?” he asks.
Savannah, clearly uncomfortable, jokes back: “Is this the ‘I plead the fifth’ segment?”
Andy reassures her she doesn’t have to elaborate, but does add, “It was so, so shocking,” prompting fellow guest (and TODAY anchor) Matt Lauer to chime in: “It was awkward.”
So awkward! Did Mady and Cara’s appearance leave a sour taste in your mouth, like it did ours? Tell us in the comments below.
