UPDATE: Confirmed! Episode 9 is indeed called "After." That's all. Keep doin' what you're doin'.
Now what? That’s what we’ve been asking ever since Team Prison was dismantled in The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 8, “Too Far Gone.”
That midseason finale aired on December 1 and we’ve been impatiently waiting for Episode 9 to launch the second half of Season 4. The return date — Sunday, February 9 — is now right around the corner, and more information is slowly trickling out about that hour and the final eight hours of the season.
AMC has yet to release an official Episode 9 title or synopsis, but according to Daily Dead the title is “After” and this is the vague synopsis: "As Rick deals with old wounds, members of the prison have to come to terms with their new environment and ask themselves if survival alone is enough."
Before digging too deep into what that means, Daily Dead also noted, “For those of you on Twitter, we’ve been told that Norman Reedus [Daryl Dixon] will take part in a live Twitter Q&A in the hours leading up to the February 9th premiere of After.” Bonus!
Episode 9 was written by Robert Kirkman, who executive produces the show and also writes the ongoing comic book series. He said Episode 9 would be a very close adaptation to the comics, and Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) has already said Episode 9 would be a big showcase for Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs).
Entertainment Weekly has a brief review of the new episode, echoing the idea that it has a strong focus on Carl, since Rick is still injured and recovering from the prison battle. EW also mentioned a flashback dream sequence, which could be tied to the synopsis’ mention of Rick’s “old wounds," or it could be the Michonne flashback we're expecting.
We probably won't see too many other members of Team Prison on Episode 9, but the comics do feature Michonne in the post-prison Rick/Carl issues, so maybe we see her back at the prison in the aftermath, then cut to the Grimes boys as they try to find shelter and supplies? She may be alone (except for her new walker pets), and perhaps she’s the one they mean in the synopsis when asking “if survival alone is enough.” That’s just a guess, though.
AMC previously released a general synopsis for the second half of Season 4:
"Following the devastating events of the midseason finale, Rick and the group are still reeling from the loss of their home, family, and friends. With the destruction of the prison, we see the group of survivors broken apart and sent on divergent paths, unsure of everyone else's fate. What was a challenging life behind fences and walls grows that much more perilous and precious as they are exposed to new dangers, new enemies, and heartbreaking choices. They will have their faith thoroughly tested -- a faith that breaks some of them and redeems others."
New dangers. New enemies. Heartbreaking choices. Faith tested. Some broken, some redeemed. Who needs redemption at this point? What heartbreaking choices do you predict?
Does this at least pique your curiosity or is it not enough information to work with? Want more? Here are the newly released episode titles for the rest of the season, complete with more vague descriptions.
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
