The Walking Dead is not a soap opera, but it is a story about human survival and that includes relationships — family members, friends, and potential nookie partners.
Season 4 returns on Sunday, February 9 and — in the new sneak peek of the second half — showrunner Scott Gimple teased some major character changes ahead: "There's a lot of relationships that are cemented, there's some that are broken, and how are they going to be facing what looks to be an even more brutal world?"
As he says those words, we see Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) look at her engagement/wedding rings, Lizzie Samuels (Brighton Sharbino) look down at whatever, Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) appearing to be on her own in woods filled with walkers, and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) in a building with zombies.
The chief relationship relationship of the show is Gleggie — the combined awesomeness of Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Maggie. They are separated again, which is frustrating, with Glenn last seen on the bus that drove away from the prison. He may still be pretty rundown from the deadly flu. Maggie, on the other hand, was last seen with Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.). They have to leave the prison on foot, which is especially bad news for Sasha, since she’s also recovering from the flu, and Bob, who was shot during the prison battle.
Sasha and Bob aren’t shown at all in the new sneak peek, and Glenn is only seen from Episode 8 as Steven Yeun talks about the dangers ahead. "This is true survival,” Steven said. “This is truly ‘How do you persevere on your own? Are you able to or do you need that person next to you?’ There's a lot of questions."
Lauren Cohan is also featured in the video, and she said Maggie will definitely be channeling her grief straight into anger. She’ll be mourning her father, Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson), who just got his head chopped off, but she’ll also be missing her sister Beth. The Greene girls won’t have any idea what happened to each other. Maggie has to hope Glenn is alive on the bus, but she’s basically stranded.
It’s good to hear her grief won’t lead her to fall apart, but Michonne did say anger makes you stupid, and stupid gets you killed. Hopefully Maggie doesn’t do anything … stupid. We’re expecting at least one major character to leave us in the last eight episodes of Season 4, and some fans think it might be Maggie.
We don’t see Maggie with anyone in the sneak peek, but that could just be deceptive editing. We also see Beth and Daryl separated, even though they left the prison together. Do they go their separate ways at some point? Is that a broken relationship? Maybe she wants to look for her sister and Daryl just wants to move forward?
And what’s with the “cemented” relationships? Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and the kids? Tyreese and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride)? We’re expecting them to meet out there in the second half. Maybe Tyreese and Carol — who actually had a romantic relationship in the comics — cement a friendship/relationship and then it’s broken when he learns the truth about Karen/David? Or maybe Carol and Daryl’s relationship is broken, or cemented? Carol is not featured at all in this sneak peek, but she has to have a huge part to play in the second half since she’s tied to so many people — especially Tyreese, Lizzie, Mika, and Daryl.
What do you think? What relationships will be cemented and broken in the second half?
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
