Pretty Little Liars is taking things back in time for Season 4, Episode 19 (“Shadow Play”) — all the way back to the 1940s! The episode, inspired by Film Noir, will take place mostly in Spencer’s mind — which is starting to go a little cuckoo with the information that Ezra could be “A.”
According to the synopsis, Spencer’s “numerous sleepless nights with the help of prescription pills start to take a toll on her as her hunt for Ali and much needed answers continues.”
It continues, “As she pours over newly acquired information, her world view takes a black and white turn. Now teleported into the world of 1940’s Film Noir, Spencer tries to come up with the answers she and her friends have been desperately looking for.” But will she be able to tell Aria about her suspicions? Or will Ezra continue to pull Aria away from her friends?
Judging from the promo, the episode, its dialogue, and its fashion will stay true to the ‘40s time period, so episode some classic silhouettes and dramatic stares. We can also expect a few memorable couples moments in the episode, especially between Spencer and Toby.
“Much of 4x19 is about the relationships, as they’ve been created over the last three or years, but everything is heightened and intensified,” executive producer Joseph Dougherty told Wetpaint Entertainment back in September. “That means the emotions you’re used to will be intensified. There will be an intense attraction between [Spencer and Toby], but at the same time, these are two people who have kept secrets from each other, and that has had an affect on their personal trust level. There’s still things being worked out there, so there’s an intensity in the relationship that you’ll see between Spencer and Toby.”
But “Shadow Play” isn’t all about Spencer’s delusional spiral. What else can we expect from the Film Noir-inspired episode? We know Ali will make an appearance thanks to this behind-the-scenes photo from Sasha Pieterse. And, “Shadow Play” will also be a good episode for Paily fans.
