Scarlett Johansson and Kate Winslet Go Makeup-Free in Vanity Fair (PHOTOS)

Scarlett Johansson and Kate Winslet know how to work the red carpet, but the actresses aren’t afraid to go au naturel.

In a new portrait collection for Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood issue, the A-listers reveal their raw and real beauty. The intimate photos — taken by Chuck Close with a rare 20-by-24-inch Polaroid camera — show the actresses going completely makeup-free while posing in front of a simple gray background.

“They had to give up a great deal of vanity in order to do [the shoot],” explained the American painter and photog. “I don’t do glamour shots, and they’re not airbrushed whatsoever.”

In fact, Close took the casual atmosphere one step further by refusing any Hollywood treatment. Those that posed for the portraits — including Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and George Clooney — weren’t provided a stylist or even transportation to the shoot. They had to “pick something [to wear], come on in, and comb their hair.” They were required to stay for the full three hours (no arriving late or leaving early for any reason) and were given nothing more than a sandwich and coffee for lunch.

“It takes a real act of generosity and faith on the part of the subject to go with it and to give me their image without having any control over what’s going to happen,” concluded Close.
