5 Reasons Katherine Needs to Stay on The Vampire Diaries — Sorry, Elena!
Season 5 of The Vampire Diarieshas been worth its watching for the increasingly zany adventures of Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) alone. Now that we’re one Petrova doppelganger body short, it seems there only room for either Katherine or Elena on this show. So, who should stay? Here are five reasons why we think Katherine is the doppelganger who deserves the spot.
Katherine makes things happen
Katherine is probably the most proactive character on TVD. She makes things happen. Heck, she’s single-handedly responsible for bringing most, if not all, of these characters together. Without her, it’s hard to imagine how plot would even happen. Sure, Elena does her share of acting, but she tends to be a much more reactive character. Other people steal her loved ones, threaten her life, or declare their love for her, and she reacts accordingly. Katherine, on the other hand, does the stealing, threatening, and declarations for herself. And that’s way more interesting.
On some level, we think everything nefarious Damon has done in recent episodes has been to get Elena’s attention. He wants her to plead for him to stop. It’s actually kind of ironic and fitting that she’s not even there to see it happen. And we’re glad that she isn’t because she would ask Damon to stop, and we think he needs to figure out his morality for himself. If TVD is really going to make us OK with this plot twist of Damon losing four seasons of character development because Elena dumped him, then they’d better make his redemption worth it. And, for it to be worth it, it needs to happen as separate from his relationship with Elena. Which means she has to stay gone.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
To be honest, we haven’t felt as affectionate towards Elena in a long time as since her soul disappeared into the Mystic Falls abyss, and we say that with love. If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then we could stand to spend a little bit more time apart from this TVD protagonist. Watching Katherine interpret Elena has been an exercise in appreciating the ways in which we genuinely like the heroine. Her love for her brother. Her steadfast devotion to Damon, even when they’re not together. Her taste in party clothes. They became things we couldn’t see because they were always there. With Elena gone, we finally have a chance to appreciate them!
It gives the other characters more room
It’s no coincidence that the first full episode that didn’t feature Elena in it was also an episode that gave worthwhile storylines to many a neglected character. Tyler got to figure out a mystery — if only momentarily. Caroline got to move on with her love life, even if it meant shredding our beloved horse sketch. Even Bonnie got to make a new friend. We’ve mentioned that one of the problems with TVD recently has been that they haven’t given their supporting characters enough to do. With Elena M.I.A., that frees up a huge chunk of story for everyone else.
Katherine is awesome
When it comes down to it, it’s not that we dislike Elena, it’s that we love Katherine. She makes us laugh. A lot. And, more than that, she is one of the most complex characters on the show. Sure, she’s a villain who takes what she wants no matter whom she hurts. But she is also a mother, a lover, a friend. She is unpredictable because, at some level, those identities mean something to her, even though she pretends they don’t. Our TVDdream: that, one episode, Katherine will really surprise us and become the heroine we’ve always thought she could be. Of course, the amazing thing about Katherine: even if she doesn’t, she’ll still be the most compelling character on this show. Long live, Queen Katherine!
