What should have been a happy time for Oscar-nominee Julia Roberts just took a tragic turn as the August: Osage County star’s half-sister, Nancy Motes, was found dead of an apparent drug overdose Sunday, February 9, at the age of 37.
Nancy’s family released a statement Monday confirming that the youngest sister of Julia and actor Eric Roberts had passed away in Los Angeles the day before.
"It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes ... confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose," the statement says. "There is no official report from the Coroner's office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated."
Nancy, the daughter of Roberts’ mother Betty Lou and stepfather Michael Motes, famously called out her famous sister for taunting her about her weight in a New York Daily News interview last summer. She alleged that years of criticism by the Academy Award-winning actress caused her to undergo gastric bypass surgery in 2010. Though she was clearly harboring some anger towards her older sibling, she was hopeful that the two would repair their relationship.
“I think we’re both trying to change our opinions of each other,” Motes said at the time. “It’s a work in progress. It’s not going to be fixed overnight, nor do I think it’s going to be fixed at this point by me just getting skinny.”
The former Glee production assistant is survived by her fiancé, John Dilbeck, a film and TV locations manager. The couple had plans to get married in May.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time.
