American Idol

Watch Alex Preston Sing an Original Song in American Idol 2014 Hollywood Week Finals — February 12, 2014

We’ve reached the final round of American Idol Hollywood Week, and let’s just say the process has been a doozy! Grueling rehearsals, clashing personalities, and mounting illnesses have all taken their toll on the contestants — not to mention the possibility of their dreams coming crashing down around them.

That said, some of the hopefuls seem more than ready to compete for the semi-finals, including 20-year-old Alex Preston. We first met the singer-songwriter back in Salt Lake City where he wowed the judges with an original song. One listen to his soft voice and advanced guitar playing makes it’s easy to see why he’s already opened for the likes of Gavin DeGraw and Of Monsters and Men.

When Alex takes the stage for his final solo performance of Hollywood, he decides to play that same original song once again. (Hey, it got him this far, didn’t it?) You can see the delight on Keith Urban’s faces as Alex strums on his guitar, while Jennifer Lopez seems totally caught up in the moment.

Alex may not be your typical American Idol, but he seems confident that he can make it on the show. “I think there’s a place for me. I think I’ll bring something new, hopefully inspire people to start writing their own music and pursue their own dreams.”

Clearly the judges agree. “You have an unusual thing,” says Keith Urban while delivering the final judgement. “It’s not something that comes through Idol all the time [...] and we’d like to see you in the Top 30.”

And with that, Alex has moved on to the next round!
