The Voice’s Melanie Martinez Releases Music Video: “Dollhouse” (VIDEO)
Our favorite oddball from The Voice, Season 3’s Melanie Martinez, has been hard at work on her own indie release, and we’re just getting to hear (and see!) some of the fruits of her labor. With the release of her first original single and music video, “Dollhouse,” we think the 18-year-old artist from Long Island may have a future hit on her hands.
The single, produced and co-written by NYC hip-hop duo Kinetics & One Love, is dark and sweet at the same time, i.e., quintessential Melanie. The haunting lyrics tell the story of a family that isn’t as perfect as they seem to outsiders: a dad who cheats, a mom who drinks, a brother who smokes pot. “Everyone thinks that we’re perfect, please don’t let them look through the curtains,” she sings.
The accompanying music video is suitably disturbing, with the already doll-like singer staring sadly into the mirror of her vanity, covered with eyeless doll heads. There’s no telling if the song it autobiographical, but Melanie sings it with such sincerity, it’s hard not to think it’s personal for her.
What do you think of Melanie’s original new single? Is it a hit, or bound for the bargain bin?
