Pretty Little Liars Season 4, Episode 19 Spoilers: Inside Emily and Paige’s “Dramatic” Kiss
There are many stories we’re excited to see play out in tonight’s film noir episode of Pretty Little Liars, but we may be most anticipating the noir-ified romance between Paige (Lindsey Shaw) and Emily (Shay Mitchell). Their lesbian romance would never have made it into an actual Hollywood film of the ‘40s, a system in which all films were tightly controlled by the eight big film studios of the time. Their storyline is “the impossible romance” of the episode made possible. Read on to find out how their dramatic kiss will go down...

“I’m interested in seeing how people react to [the Emily-Paige stuff],” writer/director of the episode Joseph Dougherty told Entertainment Weekly. “They’re the story that you wouldn’t have actually been able to tell in the '40s and I just know that when we started I said, ‘Well this is the impossible romance, so I’m going to give them all the romantic trappings that a straight couple would get having an affair,’ and it’s interesting. I don’t know if their kiss would be as dramatic if it had been done in the contemporary context. I wanted to give them the hyper romantic moment.”
PLL has gotten a lot of positive recognition for its portrayal of lesbian characters, and its treatment of Emily as a character in particular. She's not defined by her sexual orientation, but rather it is just one part of her identity, just as the other Liars’ love lives are only one part of their respective characters. We’re excited to see that treatment extend into this noir-ified episode. And, frankly, we’re just glad to get any Paily time at all. We haven’t seen Paige for what feels like ages, as Emily has been working through her feelings concerning Ali’s miraculous return from the dead. We need some more all-time favorite Paily sceneS to add to our list— and we think tonight’s episode might just give us a few.
