Does Downton Abbey Miss Dan Stevens? Not So Much, Says This Co-Star
Matthew Crawley, remember him? You know, tall, handsome guy with blond hair and a passion for the law? Drove too fast down country lanes?
We’ve almost got a whole round of Downton Abbey under our belts since the departure of Matthew, as played by Dan Stevens, and while Season 4 started in the shadows, things have considerably lightened up in the past few weeks.
But is the same true on set for Downton? Have the cast recovered from the sudden absence of one of their stars? Um, yeah, totally, says one of the Abbey’s main men.
“It’s been interesting,” Hugh Bonneville tells Page Six of life after Dan. (Hugh, of course, plays Crawley family patriarch and Matthew’s father-in-law Robert.) “The show has taken on a different flavor,” he continues. “New characters have come in his wake.”
Despite Dan’s big move to the U.S., Hugh says they still stay in touch and actually just grabbed drinks “a couple weeks ago.” But as far as missing him on the show? “I think that’s a bit too maudlin.”
Though Robert is far from dancing on Matthew’s grave, the response is more even-handed than you might expect about a show many thought down for the count this time last year. Then again, Season 4 has left all previous seasons of Downton in the dust; the premiere episode on PBS brought in an astounding 15.5 million viewers alone!
