“Things usually start accelerating as we approach a finale,” Pretty Little Liars executive producer Joseph Dougherty told Entertainment Weekly. “Aria’s going to have to find out what the hell is going on. It’s a question of how she finds out and from who she finds out and how the hell she takes it.”
Well, we can only imagine how she takes it given that Lucy teased the filming of a screaming and crying scene that made her lose her voice, but as for the when, it doesn’t seem like Spencer will be able to keep quiet about what she knows for much longer. We’ve already seen her try to tell her bestie about her boyfriend’s shady behavior once, and Spence isn’t one to let things linger on her to-do list.
It seems that we will be getting a version of Aria’s revelation that there is more to Ezra than meets the eye. In tonight’s noir-ified episode (Season 4, Episode 19: “Shadow Play”) the version of Aria inside of Spencer’s head will discover the truth: “[I'm looking forward to fans] watching Aria — although it’s not really Aria, it’s Spencer’s version of Aria in her head — watching Aria start to deconstruct maybe the story’s ending,” Joseph said. Though a bulk of the ep takes place inside of Spence’s head, the writer stressed that this doesn’t take away from the validity of it: “My feeling is it’s fully integrated with the stream of the show. The experience [Spencer] has in the noir world is actually the thing that lets her get the clue at the end that allows the story to move forward, and I think everything that we experience as an audience is completely valid and adds to our understanding of the characters. So I really don’t want people to segregate it from the run of the show. It’s really not as freestanding as you’d think it is.”
