Alanna Masterson (Tara Chambler) grew up in Hollywood (her three older brothers are all successful actors as well) but her role as Tara on The Walking Dead is unlike anything she’s ever done before. For starters Tara is the AMC hit’s first openly gay character, which is something Alanna was really interested in being a part of.
Alanna, a longtime fan of the show herself, chatted with AMCTV.com about her character, who we’d initially met in the first half of Season 4 after she and her family took in The Governor (David Morrissey) and he convinced them to hit the road.
“I didn’t know much about my character,” the 25-year-old actress admitted. “I just knew that I had a family, and that I was a lesbian and that I was just like this badass chick, which is always great. They’re really secretive over here, which is great because it keeps you on your toes. But I liked that she was tough. I have four older brothers, so I grew up in a pretty tough household, and even though Tara’s not Daryl with a crossbow or Michonne with a sword, she’s still sort of a badass in her own right. Once she meets the Governor she’s just not phased by him.”
Though we explored Tara’s sexuality a bit in the first half of the season (may her girlfriend Alicia rest in peace) right now she’s just focused on survival and redemption, as she comes to terms with the fact that she befriended a mass-murderer.
When asked if Tara’s sexuality has been embraced by fans so far, Alanna revealed, “It was awesome — they finally have a lesbian character on the show, I’m so excited! And then I got to meet my girlfriend and she was awesome. It’s the same as if they had given me a love interest that was a boy. I think watching the show, you need a little bit of romance, because you want something to fight for. You, the audience, root for the love of the two people, whether it’s Glenn and Maggie or whoever.”
We love Alanna’s attitude and couldn’t agree more. Love is love and no matter who is involved. We just hope that Tara can find a new gal along the way and redeem herself a bit by helping to bring Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) together.
