American Idol’s Ratings Take Serious Dip Despite Positive Buzz

The outlook on American Idol Season 13 has been generally good, if not great, with many (including us!) raving over the chemistry between judges Harry Connick, Jr., Jennifer Lopez, and Keith Urban. So why, pray tell, do the ratings persist in taking a nosedive?

Zap2it reports that Idol ratings took a dip from a 3.0 in the adults 18 to 49 viewership from last Thursday’s episode to a 2.7 in that same demographic for last night’s installment. It was a special Tuesday episode that introduced viewers to a whole new concept called Rush Week, so one might have expected curiosity to give the ratings a boost.

What gives, America? Of course, the Tuesday night episode could have caught folks off-guard, as the show traditionally airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays. But we can’t help but notice that the ratings have been declining all season long despite the positive reviews. Even 21st Century Fox President Chase Carey has said that the show is “winding down,” and will only be brought back on a lesser scale. That is, if it’s brought back at all.

We’ve been watching Idol since the very beginning, and while we’re all for letting a show go when it’s (sort of) on top, we can’t help but feel that ending Idol when it’s just starting to feel fresh again is a sad conclusion to a widely successful series. Last night, Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry were super enjoyable as mentors. Randy Jackson was even palatable in his new role as mentor. And, of course, we’ve maintained all season long that Harry’s straight-talk with these hopefuls is saving Idol.

Call it a fixation. Call it separation anxiety. Call it whatever you want, but we’re not quite sure we want to see Idol go when it’s just become watchable again.

What do you think? Should the show end or is it just getting good again? Weigh in below!
