"Saint Valentin" needs your help! Dancing With the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy is a total softie when it comes to kids — which is one of the many reasons we love him — and he’s currently trying to raise funds for children’s education.
Val is turning 28 on March 24 (just a week after the March 17 debut of DWTS Season 18) and he recently tweeted a birthday request to his fans, hoping they could help him support Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that builds schools around the world.
"Those of you who know me, know that I rarely ask for favors... unless its for someone else,” Val tweeted on February 15. “My birthday is coming up and all I want is to be able to build a school for some very special kids in a torn, completely impoverished area of Ghana, Africa.. where there is a lopsided lack of opportunity...and so much promise... Education, in my opinion is the key to facilitating any sort of future opportunity and success. I'm asking FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART please make a donation to Pencils of Promise.”
He linked to this Pencils of Promise fundraising page, adding that $1 from each supporter could build nearly six fully functioning/self-sustaining schools. The fundraising page has a stated goal of $25,000 and it already has more than 158 donations totaling $11,900 by the morning of Friday, February 21. If this keeps up, Val should certainly make his b-day goal!
"There’s no way I’d rather celebrate my 28th birthday than to have my friends and family help build a new school for PoP,” Val added in a note on the donation page. “Every single penny donated goes directly to creating schools, programs, and global communities. For me, education and the arts are the foundation of my career. So, for my birthday, I want to give the gift of education. Let’s get started!”
Val has been tweeting thanks to donors for their kindness, and if you want to join the list you can head here and give to Pencils of Promise. Good luck to Val — and all the future beneficiaries of this great gift!
