Venezuelan Beauty Queen Genesis Carmona, 22, Killed in Anti-Government Protest
In truly tragic news, beauty queen Genesis Carmona has died after getting shot in a protest march in her home country of Venezuela. She was just 22 years old.
Genesis died on February 19 in a protest in the city of Valencia, the capital of her home state of Carabobo, Venezuela. Genesis had been crowned Miss Tourism of Carabobo in 2013 and was currently in college.
"How long are we going to live like this?" one of Genesis's relatives asks. "How long do we have to tolerate this pressure, with them killing us? [Genesis] only needed one more semester to graduate."
This is the fifth death resulting from the ongoing political unrest in Venezuela this month. Things have gotten especially violent since opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was imprisoned recently for protesting against President Nicolas Maduro.
Genesis is the second Venezuelan beauty queen to die tragically in that nation in 2014. Last month, former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear and her ex-husband were murdered during an attempted highway robbery. The couple is survived by their five-year-old daughter, Maya.
We wish all the best to Genesis's family and loved ones during this very difficult time.
