Shakira’s New Single “Empire” Reveals a Hard Rock Edge — First Listen!
Shakira has really been shaking things up these days. The sexy Latin songstress returned to The Voice for its sixth season last night with a new, somewhat scrappier attitude. We just listened to the second single off her upcoming album on Vibe, and it’s easy to hear that Shakira is feeling fierce right about now.
The song is aptly titled “Empire,” as the singer is taking the music industry by storm. Not only did she cause quite a stir with the erotic video for the collaboration of “Can’t Remember To Forget You” with Rihanna but she and boyfriend also beat out “Posh and Becks” on Forbes’ 2013 list of most powerful pairings. What Shakira has built is nothing if not an empire.
Musically, the song also seems to shift gears. “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Whenever, Wherever” reflected her Latin influence but “Empire” has more of a rock vibe than anything else. Although it is a mid-tempo number, the heavy bass builds to a powerful crescendo at certain points. And, with lyrics like “empires of the world unite” and “the stars make love to the universe,” “Empire” comes off as forceful as Shakira herself seems to be.
The two songs she has released thus far are extremely catchy, so we’re anxiously awaiting the full album, which is due out on March 25.
