The second half of The Walking Dead Season 4 has its own little buddy system going on — Tara and Glenn, Beth and Daryl, Sasha and Bob, Tyreese and Carol — but there’s something special about Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs). They really bring out the best in each other. Heck, Carl isn’t even annoying when he’s with Michonne. That’s huge.
They’ve been building their bond since that Season 3 road trip, “Clear,” and their friendship grew stronger during the bittersweet (and cheesy) supply run of Season 4, Episode 11, “Claimed.”
Comic book writer Robert Kirkman talked to TheWalkingDead.com about these characters and what exactly it is that bonds them. “I think at this point, Carl would be clinging to anyone to try to have a connection to someone outside of his father,” RK said. “He’s had a great many people that he cared a lot about taken away from him.” (See Lori, Shane, Hershel, and Judith … for now, anyway). “He’s also definitely formed a bond with Michonne in the past, and there’s a lot of intricacies to how that bond works and what both characters are getting out of it. Specifically, that will come to pass in upcoming episodes, so there’s definitely still a lot to be revealed when it comes to Michonne and Carl.”
Interesting. It seems like a pretty simple bond to understand — she lost a son, he lost a mother; he needs a badass role model to look up to, kinda like Shane, but also someone wise and kind like Hershel; she needs a family to keep her going. But we’re always curious about things coming to pass in upcoming episodes, especially if a spoiler-phobe like Robert Kirkman is going to point them out. And if it means more time with… Carchonne? … we’re in!
Are you glad we’ll learn more about Michonne and Carl and their intricate bond? How does Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) fit into the mix? Is he the third wheel or does he complete them?
The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
