Celebrity Deaths

Basketball Diaries Director Found Dead at Age 49 — Wahlbergs Mourn “Dear Friend”

Scott Kalvert, director of the 1995 film Basketball Diaries, was found in his L.A.-area home on March 5 and pronounced dead that afternoon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his death is being investigated as a possible suicide. He was 49.

Scott may be best known for his work with Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg in the film based on Jim Carroll's memoir, but he also directed several well-known music videos — including Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff's "Parents Just Don't Understand," and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch's "Good Vibrations."

Scott also directed the New Kids on the Block's 1993 video "Dirty Dawg," and he was close to both Wahlberg brothers.

Donnie tweeted the photo shown at right on March 7, writing, "#RIP to a dear friend; Scott Kalvert. The role you played in mine, and my brother Marks career success, can't be measured. You'll be missed."

"He had an incredible eye for talent," Liz Heller, a producer on Basketball Diaries told the L.A. Times on March 7. "So many in [the film] have gone on to have amazing careers." Scott only made one other film after that, the New York street gang film Deuces Wild.

Scott is survived by his wife Sonia and two daughters, Madison and Tyler. We’re so sorry for their loss.
