Michelle Dockery Upon Seeing Dan Stevens at Auditions: “This Could Work”
Michelle Dockery’s one busy lady. The Downton Abbey star recently jetted to America for awards season and judging from her Instagram alone, she had almost as many parties to attend as Lady Mary! The 32-year-old actress also chatted up Modern Luxury magazine Manhattan, where she’s the March cover girl.
Looking lovely in Elie Saab on the cover and in various luxury designers throughout the photoshoot, Michelle didn’t give us much of anything related to Season 5 of Downton Abbey but she did share a few choice pieces from her days filming the series.
“I love that she’s so complex,” Michelle said of her notoriously chilly yet surprisingly vulnerable character. “She’s very modern in that sense because she’s more than a strong woman. She’s witty, vicious even. She doesn’t suffer fools, yet she’s sensitive. She’s a mixed bag, and I enjoy playing those sides of her.”
Michelle also spilled about her first impression of Dan Stevens, who played Mary’s love interest Matthew Crawley before leaving the show to pursue his American dreams. Back before the show even started, Michelle happened to run into Dan right after her Downton audition and it sounds like she had the same reaction we would upon seeing that particular golden English muffin in real life.
“I asked him who he was reading for, and he said Matthew, and he asked me who I was reading for, and I said Mary. I remember thinking, ‘This could work.’” You better believe it worked.
In fact, Michelle says Downton wasn’t the first time she and Dan had acted together; they also appeared in The Turn of the Screw, a 2009 TV movie based on the Henry James novel. Consider it immediately at the top of our “to watch” list.
