Not everything is (completely) changing on Dancing With the Stars Season 18. Here’s one thing that’s returning from past seasons: Macy’s Stars of Dance!
The longtime feature, which showcases some of the best choreographers and performers in different styles of dance and gives them the opportunity to perform in front of a national audience, was cut along with the Results Show last season, but now it's back, ABC announced in a resent press release. ABC also noted that Macy’s will return with “oversight from Emmy Award-winning choreographer Derek Hough.” That’s new.
Derek is the first DWTS pro to win an Emmy and he is the only five-time pro champion, so it’s not too surprising that he would get this sweet extra gig. Then again, this is openly setting him even further apart from his peers, even while he competes against them. Is that awkward, fantastic, irritating, or just fine/whatever? Do you think he asked to be the Macy’s overseer, during his should I stay, should I go consideration phase, or did they ask him, figuring they have lightning in a bottle with Derek’s creative energy?
ABC didn’t give a timeframe for when Macy’s routines would be featured, but there’s already so much going on Week 1 — between the big opening number, the 12 routines, and just letting our eyes take in the new environment. So we may not see the Macy’s dances right away.
What do you think? Are you glad to see this feature return, with Derek at the creative helm?
DWTS Season 18 premieres Monday, March 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
