Pitch Perfect’s Skylar Astin on Glee: Was Jean-Baptiste Awesome or Weird?

We’ve known for about three months now that Pitch Perfect’s leading man, Skylar Astin, would guest star on Glee. To say that we were excited is pretty much the understatement of the century. Not only was Skylar awesome in Pitch Perfect, but he is also friends with Glee’s Lea Michele (Rachel), having co-starred with her in the Broadway rock musical, Spring Awakening.

But then we met Skylar’s Jean-Baptiste during March 11's Glee Season 5, Episode 11: “City of Angels.” And to be honest, we think the character fell a little flat.

Jean-Baptiste is the leader of Throat Explosion, the show choir that the New Directions ultimately ended up losing to at Nationals. (His character bore a remarkable resemblance to Jesse St. James, played by another of Lea’s former Spring Awakening co-stars, Jonathan Groff.)

But while we adored Jesse St. James, Skylar’s Jean-Baptiste just failed to pop. His character was a total caricature — fake French accent, anyone? — but even that didn’t, well, translate. Instead of fully committing to the ridiculousness of Jean-Baptiste, Skylar held back a bit. The resulting character just didn’t stand out at all.

And can we talk about his performance of “Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto”? With the army suits and weird robot masks? We find it pretty hard to believe that this performance really did beat out the attempts of every show choir in the country. It was good, sure. But Nationals-winning good? Hardly.

What was your take on Skylar’s role? Do you think we’re being unnecessarily harsh, or do you agree that Jean-Baptiste left something to be desired? Head below and sound off.
