Two Dead, Dozens Injured in Alleged Drunk Driving Accident at SXSW Festival

Austin’s SXSW Festival took a dark turn in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 13, when an alleged drunk driver crashed into a crowd of festival goers.

The driver, who was reportedly trying to evade police at the time of the accident, struck and killed two passengers and injured many more after heading the wrong way down a one-way street, breaking down police barricades, and barreling into a large crowd gathered outside.

The driver, who, according to Rolling Stone, was driving “at a high rate of speed,” killed a man and a woman riding a moped before striking 23 others and attempting to leave the scene.

Despite the driver’s desperate dash away from the accident, some quick thinking on the part of Austin’s finest (and a stun gun) helped subdue him and bring him into custody.

Us Weekly reports that, in a news conference following the event, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo praised the quick thinking of the concertgoers who were able to get themselves out of harm’s way until the police arrived.

“We had a large crowd,” said the veteran cop. "I just thank God that a lot of the folks had already been pushed on the sidewalk or this could have been a lot worse."
