Now Mayim is back in the spotlight with a brand new cookbook, Mayim’s Vegan Table, and her views on veganism in the household. Mayim recently spoke with One Green Planet about how she enforces veganism with her sons Miles, 8, and Fred, 5.
Mayim says she teaches her kids that “animals have feelings and experiences and lives.” Also, “It’s about not going to zoos and about being very clear with my children that Momma gets sad at zoos….momma doesn’t go to the circus. These things won’t work for us.”
Mayim chooses to homeschool her children, which she says has made the enforcement of veganism in her family easier, but also notes in her cookbook that social situations such as birthday parties can be a tad tricky. Luckily, she includes a special section of the book to offer up suggestions on how to jump these types of hurdles.
For Mayim, living a vegan lifestyle with her kids doesn’t stop at the dinner plate. She also makes their shampoo and avoids commercial cleaning products. While this may seem like a lot, the 38-year-old insists that “Any positive attention towards eating differently, not just becoming vegan or becoming vegetarian” is a step in the right direction.
