Grey Sloan Memorial will no longer be the residence for two surgical residents! Deadline reports that Grey's Anatomy is casting off Gaius Charles (Shane Ross) and Tessa Ferrer (Leah Murphy) — after only a season of them being series regulars.
And, even more surprisingly, the two actors might not be leaving the gig voluntarily. Deadline asserts that Gaius and Leah "are not getting their contracts picked up for next season" — though it's still unknown whether they might recur or guest-star in the presumed Season 11.
This makes Gaius and Leah the only two series regulars in the show's history to leave after just one season.
Grey's has alternated between violent season finales and emotionally-resonant ones in recent years, and by all indications, Season 10's conclusion will be the former. Executive producer Tony Phelan teased that the season-capper will leave us "shaken not stirred," and now these two departures makes us worry that Leah and Shane might not be long for this world.
Plus, the news is especially surprising since Leah and Shane have both had such weighty storylines recently. Leah outed herself as the sexual-harassment whistleblower; and Shane became Cristina's (Sandra Oh) boytoy, had a meltdown over Heather's (Tina Majorino) death, and found a mentor in Richard (James Pickens Jr.).
Gaius and Tessa's exits also further breaks up the second wave of interns-turned-residents — after Heather bit the dust in the Season 10 premiere.
Now only Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) and Jo (Camilla Luddington) are left. Camilla's contract is probably safe — as Jo is Alex's (Justin Chambers) seemingly steady girlfriend. But if we were Jerrika, we'd being hoping that Stephanie gets some juicy storylines soon!
