*Comic book spoilers ahead*
See, this is why we kick ourselves when we read too much into The Powers That Be’s teases — for The Walking Dead Season 4 or The Walking Dead comic book series. Sometimes they’re misleading.
In his recent Reddit AMA, comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman was asked what would happen in the next issue, #124. RK answered, "We learn Rick's final fate." It's a great tease, but did it pan out? The new issue was released today (March 26). We last saw Rick with an arrow through his stomach, thanks to a double-cross from Dwight, during the “All Out War” between Rick and Negan’s The Saviors. Rick is still alive in the new issue, but Negan's group had been coating weapons with walker insides, so anyone who was hit would die; but they started doing that after Dwight joined Rick's group, so Dwight may not have done that himself.
The issue includes a panel where it’s discussed that the weapons were contaminated. "Dear God ... Then anyone who was injured by one of their weapons ... no matter how minor the wound ... will ... die." Rick hears that and has a shocked look, but it's not much of a final fate. Will he die or was his arrow not tainted? He's not showing any signs of being infected yet. Fans have been discussing the issue on TheWalkingDead.com and Comicbook.com and no one seems sure about Rick's final fate.
The next issue, #125, comes out on April 9, and this volume ends with #126 on April 23. Back in October 2012, Robert Kirkman said at New York Comic Con, “I have big events planned for #125 and I know where I’m going to be for issue #200.” It's still possible that the plan is for Rick to die in #125, or maybe Negan is the one who dies. We know big changes are ahead in the comics. As RK said in a Letter Hacks response in Issue 119, "Rest assured 'All Out War' is taking us to some very new, very different and exciting places. This will be a drastically different book starting with Issue 127, but that's all I'm going to say."
"A New Beginning" is ahead, whatever that will entail. Will it mean the death of Rick? Back in 2012, RK told Daily Dead, "I definitely think that Rick has been the anchor for the series and may be the anchor of the series for a long time. I do have plans for him and I know where his story is going, but I promise that Rick will not survive the entire run of the book.” It's now almost two full years later. Is the plan for Rick to stay or go? His final fate is still up in the air...
